When playing poker, the average player focuses on what he should do when playing poker. They think of things they should do like betting out, controlling the pot, playing tight, and just playing a smart game of poker. While poker players focus on the things they should do, they fail to think of the things they should not do when they are amidst a poker session. With that in mind, here are some tips on what to avoid when playing poker.

A pokerstar player should avoid playing marginal hands out of position. When we limp or raise from an early position with hands that are marginal, we risk losing chips. Everything in poker should be done in a logical and methodical manner. When we play from late position, we act with much more information than we do from early position. Thus, we can confidently play a larger number of hands from late position. When playing from early position, we want to commit chips to the pot with hands that can stand or tolerate the absence of information. This means marginal holdings should not be played from early position, as it will cost us chips due to a lack of information about the strength of our opposition’s hands.

Another thing to avoid when playing poker at a site like PokerStars is playing against strong players. While it might benefit the ego to attack the strongest and most skilled poker player at the table, it rarely benefits our chip stack or bankroll. Poker players should follow the path of a stream or river. Water in a stream follows the path of least resistance. If there is a large rock in the stream, water flows around it, as there is less resistance in going around the rock than there is trying to push the rock downstream or going through it. In poker, we want to avoid playing against strong players. Odds are, there is easier money to bring to our stacks and the stronger players will provide far more resistance in handing over their chips. Thus, we want to tangle with the weaker players before considering mixing it up with the stronger players without the best of it.

Finally, a professional poker player want to avoid playing in unprofitable situations. This could mean anything from calling large bets on a draw, or calling an all-in bet when we could be drawing dead, or even limping with aces at a loose and weak table. When playing poker, we want to concentrate on avoiding any habits and situations that lose us money, while focusing solely on participating in situations and activities that are designed to bring us profit more often than not.
